Emma is a junior in high school and is barely getting by - and trying everything she can to stay off of the social radar. After her childhood dog dies, her mother tries to cheer her up by bringing home a tiny Chihuahua. Emma names her Sadie and they quickly form a bond. As they get to know each other, Emma learns that Sadie is very intelligent and they learn to communicate with each other. Together they face the risk of discovery, family tragedy, and cruel situations.

This book is recommended for a mature audience due to the storyline dealing with detailed animal cruelty, dog fighting, and horrendous puppy mill conditions. Some of these scenes can be really hard to stomach. Despite some of the gruesome scenes, “Sadie Sapiens” is a very sweet story. The bond that Emma and Sadie develop is absolutely precious. The reader will find that Emma is a strong and loving character; Sadie is amazingly sharp and clever; all wonderful characteristics of adored characters. The storyline is jam-packed with suspense that will have the reader holding their breath and frantically reading through the pages as fast as possible to see what is around the corner for these two characters. By the end of the story, the reader will be wishing for a pet companion as amazing as Sadie.
