Skeletal, hooded, shrouded in black and shadow, a figure of death and plague, the Grim Reaper is inevitable. Death comes for us all and, in the end, the Lord of Death will be waiting for us. The Grim Reaper is one of the classic mythical creatures and a surprisingly common one among the many cultures and societies in the world today. But where did he come from? How did this figure of death and darkness become so prominent in our world today?
To answer that question, we have to take a deep dive into history. The Legend is Born
Mythologies were used by primitive cultures as a means of dealing with all aspects of the human condition: good vs. evil, the origin of humanity, traditions, beliefs and religions, the purpose behind suffering, and so much more. Essentially, mythologies all over the world were used to pass their culture from one generation to another, and as a means to explain the unexplainable.
In early human history, there was no such thing as “science” to explain why an apparently healthy man died at the age of 25, why children were stillborn, or what caused disease. Death was a vague notion to primitive humans, and thus legends and myths were created to explain something they could not understand.
