FANTASY:  The Hunter is a being haunted by a past he cannot remember and enslaved by a thirst for blood, which blackens his soul and threatens the world with damnation. He searches for answers across a lonely desert, protecting a young innocent by the name of Hailen. The boy’s innocent soul is the only thing that can quiet the demons who haunt him.

Yet the Hunter is also being hunted. Holy Clerics seek to steal his memories and raiders steal young Hailen to compel The Hunter to do their evil bidding. The Hunter must use all his resources to save Hailen and continue his quest for answers about his own past and the future of the world.

Mr. Peloquin has created a fantasy world with a dark tone reminiscent of Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” series. The Hunter is a rich and complex anti-hero; a desperate man struggling to hold on to the last shreds of his humanity as supernatural forces threaten to rend his soul. Mr. Peloquin does a fantastic job of developing his character through his prose, providing needed backstory on his characters with the strength of good story-telling. The plot at times becomes somewhat bogged down with the complexity of the story being told. The author’s use of flashbacks builds effective tension, however at times proves confusing with the addition of a lot of secondary characters within this framework. These problems are smoothed out by the excellent writing skills of the author and the quality of the character development throughout the story. “Darkblade Protector” leaves many questions unanswered, but still stands on its own as an engrossing and highly readable novel in this genre.
