The Wicked Governess (Blackhaven Brides #6)

Mary
Lancaster
Genre:
Historical

The occupation of a governess is less than stable, and when Caroline Grey finds herself falsely accused of seducing her employer’s son, only the quick thinking of that same son saves Caroline from unemployment. Sent to Haven Hall in a temporary position as governess in the employ of the mysterious and foreboding Javan Benedict, Caroline attempts to aid her adorable but mute pupil and uncover the tragedy that surrounds its master. As someone attempts to scare the family away from the hall, and an old enemy seeks to harm Benedict, Caroline finds that despite everything, helping her new employer might not just put her life at risk but also rather place her in danger of losing her heart.

In the sixth addition to the “Blackhaven Brides” series, Ms. Lancaster once again takes a side character, adds depth and throws in some romance. Including some cameo appearances of previous lead characters, Caroline and Javan have a sweet romance with some lurking danger from one of Javan’s old enemies. While both the romance and the danger are solid enough, they never stray into engrossing territory. Further, this is a "middle of the series" book with few surprises or twists, and many spoilers and some confusion if read as out of order. Still, the sweet relationship between the main characters provides the kind of light fun a reader might wish for as the personalities of the main characters play off one another so well that the reader cannot help but root for them.
