When Highlander Findley McKenna returns the young thieves caught trying to steal his clan’s cattle to their home, the last thing he expects to find is a beautiful young widow living in squalor trying to keep what is left of her clan together and alive.  The thieves are her sons, and Findley is immediately enamored of the boys’ mother, Maggy.  He believes her inner strength and courage would make him a fine wife.  When a villainous neighbor kidnaps one of Maggy’s sons in an attempt to force Maggy into marriage, Findley offers to help her rescue him.  During their time together, Maggy begins to have feelings for Findley as well, but after all she has survived, can she learn to trust a man again?
This is a light Highland romance written with charming Scottish dialect, but it is its very lightness that keeps it from being truly great. Findley falls for Maggy far too quickly to be believable, and the romance between Maggy and Findley is very surface-level with little motivation for deeper feelings to develop.  In the first half of the book, there are only small parts in the plot that keep readers guessing or wanting to turn the next page.  The second half does pick up, and readers who stick with it will be rewarded with a very sweet ending.  Highland lovers looking for a cozy, reliable read to curl up with on a rainy day will be satisfied!
