Before I was a cover artist, I was an excited author with my very first publishing contract. (And a huge thanks to Angela Knight who told me never to give up and showed me there were plenty of interested fish in the publishing sea.) At the time, electronic small presses were the thing du jour and the Big Six looked to indie houses to take on new genres and be the innovators in the industry.
Paranormal romances were all the rage; you couldn’t step without bumping into a vampire or werewolf. (Sometimes both, in my case). And, while authors played with every unique idea imaginable, the titles of these works were disproportionately lacking originality. At one point “dark” was used in titles for everything paranormal. This was followed by “night.” Then it was “darkest” because hey, it’s darker then dark, right? These days it’s all about Billionaires –Millionaires got caught up in inflation.
