EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) was developed by Gary Craig in the early 1990’s to help with a wide variety of physical, emotional, and mental problems, such as phobias, depression, stress related disorders, or my specialty, writer’s block or anything pertaining to the creative process.
There are many different ways of explaining EFT and how it works, but it basically it comes down to stimulating acupuncture points while tuning into a specific emotion.
The way I explain EFT is that it doesn’t solve our problems, but takes the emotional charge off of it, so that you, who is the expert in your own life, can figure out the solution for yourself.
When we’re faced with negative emotions, we put our brain into the fight, flight, or freeze state. Even though there usually isn’t a life or death situation, our bodies don’t recognize the difference. To our brains, we’re running from the Saber tooth tiger, and everyone knows that when we’re running for our lives, it’s not the best time to come up with the plot for our next block buster series.
         There is substantial research that supports the efficacy of EFT. EFT meets the criteria for evidence-based treatments proposed by the Division 12 of the American Psychological Association for a multitude of issues. One randomized controlled trial saw that the stress hormone cortisol declined 24% after a single EFT session, compared to a 14% decline seen after traditional talk therapy or rest.
It’s not until we can take the negative charge out of any situation that we can fully use the rest of our brain to come up with a solution.
