Whose Side (POV) Are You On, Anyways?!?

You know that expression, "Never say never"?  I've been trying to keep that in mind in relation to romance for years now.  I've been a voracious reader since I was a kid, and as far as romances go?  Almost 30 years of experience with virtually every subgenre (if this column was a resume), and sometimes I think I've almost seen it all. When it seemed as though every book became one of a trilogy, then of a series, I kept the faith. Before the word "standalone" was even coined, I remained optimistic that one day the trend would subside and once again I could read a book that was actually FINISHED when I reached the end. When "Twilight" was published, and suddenly every book released for the next five years was about older, stalky vampires and young clumsy heroines, I held my tongue. Surely to goodness, I thought, not everyone wants to read these books 24/7? And really, why do these books have to be so looooong?
