As I sit down to write my monthly babble, spring has finally arrived on the Canadian Prairies. (I hope, it also tried to snow again this morning, so I must remain cautious in my enthusiasm.) Folks around here are slowly emerging from their homes and shedding winter coats; blinking in the bright sunshine and raising pasty winter faces to the sun's warming rays. We are also checking our calendars, and counting how many weekends are left until that long weekend in May that announces to the entire world that summer is coming, and the weekend when it seems the entire civilized world heads to the greenhouse for bedding plants. In Canada, that long weekend is when we celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria. For Americans, this coincides with Memorial Day weekend.  When I was trying to recollect everything I could about Queen Victoria, all I could come up with was the phrase, "Close your eyes and think of England", and the factoid that she smoked marijuana to deal with menstrual cramps. Not a great legacy, considering I'm Canadian and probably learned about her in school!
