The Wolf's Joy (Masters of Maria Book 3)

Genre:
Paranormal

Ben Swain is having trouble with his inner wolf — in a literal sense.  The shape shifter’s animal side is desperate for a mate and the intensity of his animal needs threaten to subsume his human side.  When he meets a young waitress named Alex Cavanaugh, his animal instincts tell him that he has met his mate. Alex however needs some convincing. After all, how can she be sure that this ruggedly handsome stranger is the man who can make all her dreams come true?

Ms. Trent manages to take a rather unrealistic premise for a romance and deftly creates a believable and highly charged love story. Alex and Ben are layered individuals who behave with humor and grace given the somewhat unusual circumstances of their relationship.  The prose is descriptive, and the dialogue is witty and well written, with a depth of character that propels the story along at a good pace.  Unfortunately, there is just not much of a story in “The Wolf’s Joy”.  The author gives the reader glimpses of a rich world of supernatural world but leaves the reader at the gate. “Wolf’s Joy” devolves into a series of convenient plot devices before it has a chance to fully realize its potential as a great story.  This is disappointing because “Wolf’s Joy” has such good characters and the writing is great. “Wolf’s Joy” is a lovely promise that needs to be fulfilled.
