A Price to Be Paid (Hemstreet Witches #3)

Devi has a simple life. Simple but enjoyable, though of late she has been plagued by an unsolicited suitor and an odd desire for something more, something new. The youngest of four sisters, Devi’s identity is completely wrapped up in the Hemstreet name. Yet she begins to wonder who she really is, separate from her family, and if she will ever find her own happiness in life.

After a one-night stand several years ago Asa became a single father, and he adores his son. He acquired an inheritance from a relative and made some wise business decisions so he has never wanted for money. Still, he has never truly found a partner—someone he could be with, love, and who would love his son, as well.  When a political office opens up, rumors fly and ethere is only one thing to do—get married. Now, just to find the right woman…

“A Price to Be Paid” is a quaint romance with a touch of magic. The characters have a slight charm to them especially for readers who love small town, country romances. The author is obviously very familiar with the setting and comfortable describing the scenery. Where the story falls short is in the lack of suspense. Everything went as expected. The reader never really felt that the happy ending is reachable and, therefore, develops little sympathy for the characters. Additionally, the dialogue seems a bit unrealistic, relying heavily on the exclusion of contractions. There are also several noticeable grammar and spelling errors. All in all, not a page-turner but a nice read for a lazy afternoon.
