Captive of the Corsairs (Heart of the Corsairs #1)

Genre:
Historical

After being orphaned as a child, Sophia Green is raised by her wealthy extended family. She is the constant companion to her cousin Laura, while she hides her unrequited feelings for Laura’s brother Sam. On a sea voyage with Laura to Italy, Sophia meets the dashing Captain Kit Hardacre. He has a checkered past, having been kidnapped by Barbary Coast pirates as a child. Something about the Captain, however, has Sophia questioning her devotion to Sam.

What’s not to love about a dashing sea Captain? He is confident, suave, debonair and oh-so-sexy! Sophia’s character, for her part, is a bit fickle and "namby-pamby", as she professes her love for Sam one moment, then melts into tingling sensations when Kit kisses her.   There are several storylines in the book, each jumping around, leaving the reader dizzy and wondering where the story is actually going.

The marriage of Kit and Sophia is a bit of a puzzle, and author Elizabeth Ellen Carter takes her time picking up the threads of the story so that readers can follow. Human trafficking is part of the story line in the book, so readers beware. All in all, lovers of historical romance will be rooting for Sophia and Kit to find their happy ever after, in spite of all the detours.
