Baby boomers are influencing almost every facet of our economy—including publishing. Readers tend to fall for heroes or heroines whose trials and triumphs reflect their own. And so, the logic would follow that Romance writers—and publishers in general—would want to, uh, tap that, right? Well…maybe. Eventually. The industry is a little slow to come around. The problem is, the Romance genre has always skewed younger than their expected reader demographic. As a writer friend once told me, readers will read down in age, but not up. Whether that’s true or not, age does seem to be a line in the sand for some editors and publishers. But, there are a number of writers (myself included) who find characters aged thirty-five and up far more intriguing than the twenty-something billionaires crowding the bookstore shelves.
