Isbeth's Redemption: Episode 5

“The great Earl of Dentin, former Securer of the Realm, eyed Isbeth and declared, “You will do nicely.” “Do what?” Isbeth stared at the man in confusion. She stood at his kitchen table in a half soaked state with slowly thawing feet. In the few moments since she followed him through his back door, he had ignored her, insulted her, and declared her adequate. “I don't understand any of this. Please give me my shawl and blanket and let me go. I shall lose my post if I don't return with the meat and wine I was sent to fetch.” “We can't have that.” The Earl of Dentin motioned for her to sit. “Eat. Gelsey will go fetch you meat from our meat monger around the corner. What kind of wine do you require? High quality?” “But–”  “Don't argue,” the kitchen maid advised as she set about donning a heavy cloak that hung on a peg near the door. “It is decided. Any special instructions about the lamb?”  Dumbfounded, Isbeth shook her head.
The earl rose from his chair and frowned at her. “I am not going to ask again, miss. Sit.”  Isbeth sat.  “Now eat while I fetch that wine.”  Obediently, Isbeth drew the bread closer and began cutting a slice. She had eaten two slices of bread and five of ham when the earl reappeared from the depths of the house. Setting two bottles of wine on tabletop, he turned to check her wraps. Isbeth watched him for a moment, gathering her courage to ask the question burning in her mind.  “I don't understand what you want from me.”
