There was a man bleeding out on Isbeth’s kitchen table.Actually it was Madam Fores’ kitchen. Isbeth only worked in it as a maid-of-all-work for the boarding house. She slept there too, on a small pallet near the hearth so she could watch the fire. Although it was the early hours of the morning, she couldn’t return to bed until she escorted the man, Master Ashfield, out of her kitchen. He spoke out of the shadows. “Maybe I best take care of myself. I doubt you get paid to nurse Madam Fores’ lodgers.”
Despite his comment, he didn’t move from his position, slumped over the table in the center of the room. “Don’t spout nonsense.” She set the lantern on the table on her way to tend the fire. The embers still glowed. She fed them a fresh log. Pushing back onto her heels, she brushed her hands free of soot and dirt. She swung an iron hook over the fire and hung a kettle of water on it. “Now then, let me see that injury again. How did you gain it?” “I was stabbed.
