Convention Fever: Dos, Don'ts, Rumor Wars

With Romantic Times Convention in New Orleans safely behind us (and I say safely because I was lucky enough to escape the flu that seemed to plague a number of my friends), and the 2014 convention season in full swing, I’d like to share a few conference tips and tidbits to those of you thinking about attending conferences.
Whether you’re going to a huge gathering such as RT or a relatively tame regional event, I hope these pointers can apply.
The Dos:
DO reserve your hotel and flight as much in advance as possible.  The hotel for RT was sold out within days of posting (and almost a year in advance) – probably because of the New Orleans location.
DO plan out what promotional opportunities you want to pursue, and schedule them well in advance. If you are going to be printing promotional swag, give yourself plenty of time to design them or hire a designer; shop for the best prices for printing; and ship everything to yourself to see what it looks like without spending an arm and a leg on priority rush. I am ashamed to admit one of the key pieces of my promotional swag took three tries before I got the result I wanted –luckily I gave myself plenty of time to futz with the darn things.
