As a professional cover designer, my work is split fairly evenly between publishing houses and indie authors.  While I love seeing authors take charge of their careers, an alarming trend I’m noticing is the sacrifice of industry expertise in favor of author emotions or need for control. An author's emotions are a great thing – they make books gripping, conflict stronger and characters believable. But those same emotions can, just as your need to control your destiny may close your eyes and ears to advice of professionals, cripple book sales by not attracting readers.
