Archetyping: The Charmer

 He made the fedora and the Rat Pack class sexy again. And those sapphire eyes? And that alluring self-assured smile? Oh, and that captivating strut? Whoa, momma! You know who I’m talking about—Matt Bomer in “White Collar”. *fanning face frantically* He doesn’t have to say a word, not a single sound, and we’re all hypnotized. His role as an art thief, counterfeiter, and con man would have anyone forking over their worldly possessions, and doing it with a smile on their face. “Yes, please, take me to the cleaners.”His has a presence. A certain...je ne sais quoi, that forces us to sit up and take notice. And yet, it’s the KIND of presence that sets this character apart. Though other archetypes demand attention, Chris Hemsworth as Thor for example, this archetype is suave, urbane, and draws us in like a moth to the flame. When you’re watching episodes of “White Collar”, take particular note of the interaction between the two main characters. Totally different archetypes, but it makes the show. It’s a dynamic that works. Obviously. So, how do you tell the difference between the debonair Charmer and the powerful Alpha? It seems like a no-brainer, right? Well, it’s sometimes harder than it seems.
